Mighty MtBuller

Victorias Mountainbike Mecca.

(most tracks designed by the man who knows his stuff)

Once again the weather gods have been kind to Team Wombat and our April weekend at Buller was blessed with blue skies and grippy conditions.

After snowfall on Friday there was enough moisture on the ground to eliminate any annoying summer “Buller Dust” and give us a world of grip on the excellent singletracks designed by someone who seems to know his stuff. (or so we have been told by the Bullerians)

MtBuller is mostly known as a downhill location (Lifts and all) so looking for a challenge naturally we went Enduro riding instead.

"Stonefly"

Day one we headed out to tackle “Stonefly” Buller’s premium Enduro trail over to Mt Sterling. (Man from Snowy River country-yeahh).

Mountainbiking at Bullers Stonefly starts of with a challenging, fantastic, rewarding never-ending bastard climb up to MtSterling, which depending on your fitness level and bike setup, you are going to hate or love.Choose to tackle the climb at racing speed or in a sightseeing kind of way, just make sure you get to the top because the effort is bloody worth it to get to blast the downhill singletrack on the other side of Sterling.

Once you crank down the windy singletrack (designed by someone who knows his stuff, so we have been told) all effort of the climb will be forgotten and gravity is doing it’s thing to spin you into a flow of seamless never-ending side to side berms and off camber bits, down great shoots over roots and rocks into singletrack heaven.

All this amongst a pristine Australian alpine environment with the most amazing snow gums on this planet.

After this brilliant singletrack on Stonefly we made our way back to Buller via various climbs and little downhills along the way all driven by the thought of chilled beers at the end. (Temperature all day hovering around 5 degrees Celsius perfect for beers and cranking).

Heaps of beers and food back at the camp, brilliant day, tired and happy, Stonefly did good.

"Misty Twist"

Day two and morning minus temperatures make sleeping in easy and only some hardy Bullerians are on the trails early.Wombats need their sleep so after a good breakfast and a truckload of coffee we venture out midmorning to make our appointment with “Misty Twist”

As the name suggest it is a twisty singletrack a bit closer to Buller and with less challenging uphills than Stonefly but still some great downhill singletrack.(By the way this track was designed by someone who knows his stuff so we have been told).

To get there we snake ourselves up a track called Medusa with uphill switchbacks that are a lungbusting joy to behold and ensure that everyone is nicely warmed up by the time we get to the top of “Misty Twist” .

We drop into a singletrack with berm after berm (just great) and flow that makes us very, very happy Wombats.

Once again we marvel at the magnificent environment with snow gums a plenty zooming past us at speed.

Misty Twist gives us all that was promised, singletrack in easy reach of Buller but with enough effort spend to make you feel you have done something.

Misty Twist and Stonefly we will be back to have another go soon, and all thanks to a man who knows his stuff or so we have been told.
