Glenrock - Newcastle:

The Seat of Contemplation – the meaning of life “43”

Just a few km outside Newcastle “Glenrock National Park” is an area for riding with great singletrack trails from flow to technical and some of the most stunning, amazing ocean views.

Base yourself at the trailhead carpark on Gun Club Road next to the watertanks.

Kennys:

After the gate “Kennys” trail is a good start just on your left. This flow trail is a great warm up with some nice downs and some easy ups.

“Kennys” ends on sealed “Poo Road” (ends at Newcastle shitfarm) follow it downhill for a couple of hundred meters and turn right into Shaft trail which is a fast singletrack with some nice log jumps.

Hickson DH:

a steep decent which packs a punch for such a short section

Before you hit the shitfarm Hickson DH trail will come in from your left. (look up the hill)

Its worth the short climb/push up Hickson to end up on the hang glider starting ramp with never ending ocean views of the beaches below. On your climb take the time to look at some of the features you will encounter on your way back down. Once taken in the views its time to hammer back down the Hickson DH back into bottom of Shaft.

Some fast rock-garden, a bit of northshore and some road gap sized jumps just after you re-enter shaft further down will challenge most riders.

Once you hit the shitfarm fence stay left to make your way towards “Snake and Ladder”

(If you go right at the shitfarm it will get you to the surf beach, worth a look)

Jack Moir riding Hickson how it should be ridden!!!

“The Seat of Contemplation”

“Snake and Ladders” coming up on your right is the main trail to get you back up the hill. Nice well build climb trail which you probably will use regularly while in the park.

Climb up until intersection of trails. Stay left and hammer down a short rutted downhill section (with no name). You will end up at the “Seat of Contemplation” on the Yeularbah trail

Take a seat, take in the ocean views and contemplate how lucky you are to be able to enjoy this day.

Once you reached full contemplation ride left along “Hang Ten” and make your way back to “Snakes and Ladders” coming up now on your left.

This time stay right on the intersection on “Snakes and Ladders” and after some more climbing you will hit “Seismic” a nice fast flow trail with great berms.

Bottom of “Seismic is a pumptrack/jump area.

Go past the jumps, stay left and climb up to Gun Club Road. Stay right on Gun Club to get you back to the start at the watertanks.

While riding back to the car on Gun Club road take note of the trails leading off into the left. These trails are not official trails but are very goooood.

The Not so official, Dark side of Glenrock:

From the trailhead at the watertanks through the gate ride down Gun Club road and check out the trails coming up on your right side.

First thing first, these are not on the map and are not marked with names or grades.

You will find some good rooty, rocky technical stuff including a steep rock gully which is a technical monster.

Some good largeish gap jumps are also to be had in this area.

All these trails are quite short and all end up on a fire road. (Fernleigh management Trail or Yeularbah Trail on map).

This area is real fun to explore to see what you can find to challenge yourself.

Jack Moir doing the Dark Side, check out the rockgarden at the end, he smashes it. Moir is the man!!!

While riding Glenrock I spoke to lots of friendly locals which were helpful to point out all the great areas to ride. All of them clearly very proud of their unique riding area and I am very greatful for them sharing their insight and knowledge, thanks guys and gals.

Ride on mates ………………. Xandi
